R.A.N Tip of The Week! Pickleball Anyone?

I recently heard of pickleball at a meeting I was attending with NYC Parks and Recreation program division team regarding a collaboration opportunity for the @rocanaturalculturalfoundation Fall Freedom Festival at Tappen Park on Saturday, October 12, 2024. I had never heard of the sport until then and I was fascinated about learning more.

Neil Harmon, Chief of Recreation stated that the newly renovated Skyline Park at 171 Harvard Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10301 had four Pickleball Courts and a large population of regular players that is open to the public daily.

Pickleball came up again at The Meyers family BBQ where we learned we had a Pickleball player amongst us, Patrick Meyers who plays regularly and said it is a good form of exercise. Well, at that point I made up my mind I was going to check out this pickleball sport for myself and the possibility of incorporating it in my speed walking fitness routine to help me lose these stubborn 9 1/2 pounds.

It was on and popping when Patrick surprised his brother, Virgilio with a set of paddles. Yeah, boy, lets go get our pickleball game on! We arrived at Skyline Park on Saturday, August 31, 2024 and met a Pickleball Tournament in action. There were a park full of men and women players, ranging from ages early 30's to mid 80's! This sport was indeed for all ages and has long been a favorite in places like tennis and community centers. The court is only a quarter the size of a tennis court. Other than a net, a few balls, and pickleball paddles, you don't need any other equipment.

We saw Patrick and he and his partner was up next to play against the winning team. As we watched from the sidelines, we realized they were pretty good and ended up winning the match. Mr. Meyers and I was excited and couldn't wait to get on the court in between matches to test our skill levels. It was so much fun, easy on the joints and we worked up such a sweat; surely, I loss some inches.

Everyone from kids to grandparents can play pickleball, making it ideal for the entire family. Go get your pickleball on!
